How Card Printers Work

So you have the opportunity to start ID card printing in your business.  The cards will be used to identify your employees.  It will be beneficial to print your own badges on your cards printer in house without waiting for a card printing service bureau to print your cards and ship them to the proper location.  With a card system in house, you can provide a new employee with a completed badge within minutes of their arrival.

What else can your card printer provide for your business as well as photo identification?  The options are almost endless.  When a list is made, there is always a new use that a business has found to use the custom card for a beneficial use.  We will talk about some of the most popular uses today.

The most common use for an ID card printed with ID card printers is photo identification.  A basic photo identification card normally provides a picture of the card holder, the logo of the company authorizing the card and other detailed information such as name, title and expiration date. Service companies, retail organizations and large corporations often require the use of ID badges when on company property or doing company business.

Unique bar codes can be printed on the identification card.  The bar code can be read by a card reader.  With the appropriate systems in place, the reader can transmit the card information to be used for payroll, debit functions, further identification purposes, media and equipment checkout and other important business functions.  A report of activity can be easily created in most software programs to track the use of the card and provide management with appropriate information.

The card is also able to be used as an access card.  Some companies secure their facilities and their networks and prohibit unauthorized people from accessing the property. To prevent a security officer from guarding the area, the company will place an access system in their facility to authorize and monitor the comings and goings of their employees.  The card has unique embedded information identifying the employee and is often used as a multi function card.  The card can be utilized as a photo identification card as well as other monitoring with the use of a bar code on the card.

Magnetic strips are able to be encoded as well on some plastic cards to provide unique information for business applications.  Examples of this type of card are hotel access cards, bank cards or credit cards.

Other options available with id card printers, such as a Fargo printer, include the use of a hologram overlaminate.  The overlaminate is a hologram or sometimes clear protective coat on one or both sides of the card.  The purpose is to extend the life of the card.  Other reason to put a hologram overlaminate on that card is to authenticate the card to the particular organization issuing the card.  Often you will see a custom overlaminate on state drivers licenses.  These overlams are unique to the organization and provide an additional means to verify the card.
